In this project, we developed a numerical protection relay which could detect over current faults in 3-phase transmission line using the latest Sliding Discrete Fourier Transform (SDFT) algorithm. When fault detected in one/two of the phase, it opens circuit breaker of that specific phase and tries to close after set time. If fault persist, it attempts again and opens all three phase if fault is not cleared. However, if fault was transient and cleared by itself, circuit breaker is closed and system remains functional.
The project provide solution to bigger problem arises due to interruption of power supply because of transient faults. More than 80% of faults are transient in nature and by automating the process of dealing with them, we can make reliable power system.
The project was a great success and it is now being used in Power Systems Lab at A.D. Patel Institute of Technology to demonstrate students, working of numerical relay and how to improve power system.
